Know more about Windows Phone 7.5

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system was a complete ground-up rewrite of its mobile OS. The Mango update adds many new features, and since the OS is quite an unfamiliar one to most users (given the dismal sales of WP7 devices), we've written this as an introduction and guide to help users get to know their handsets better. You may also want to check out our earlier review on the the first version of the WP7 OS.

Learning about the UI

Windows Phone's Metro UI is all about Tiles and Hubs, and right from the start, you'll notice that these tiles update based on the information received--if you have four unread messages, your Message tile will flip to show the amount. It's pretty intuitive and you'll easily understand what going on with your phone at a glance.

Is Indian IT sustainable?

Does Indian IT lag sustainability?Indian IT sector, riding high on the outsourcing wave to expand its global footprint, seems to get stuck with this conventional model. But it is not the endgame rather it shows signs of becoming stagnant.
Once the realization sets in that the market is stagnating, and the existing business model goes "stale", these companies will have to think of what comes next. They will need to rejig their business models to garner growth and brand themselves as sustainable.

Lenovo Ultrabook tablet, on the way

Lenovo announced an Ultrabook-like laptop last year: the IdeaPad U260.Lenovo is expected to announce an Ultrabook and a 7-inch Android tablet in the coming weeks.

The IdeaPad U300s would be Lenovo's first portable tagged as an Ultrabook--a category of sub-0.8-inch-thick laptops that has many of the hallmarks of Apple's MacBook Air. That is, weighing typically 3 pounds or less, constructed from special materials like aluminum or carbon fiber, powered by Intel Sandy Bridge processors, and priced--at least some models--below $1,000.

Facebook growth prompts plans for second campus

The world's leading social network topped out at 162 million monthly unique visitors in July--a record high--and it's now the third largest video-sharing site in the United States, just behind Vevo (No. 2) and YouTube (No. 1), according to ComScore's newest data.
With this type of surging growth, no wonder Facebook needs new digs.
Today it was revealed in the San Jose Mercury News that a second Facebook campus is in the works, even as employees are just starting to migrate from the company's current location in Palo Alto, Calif., to a sprawling new headquarters in nearby Menlo Park.

HTC to unveil new Windows Phone devices on Sept. 1?

htc invite
According to rumors, HTC will unveil two new Windows Phone devices September 1 but no Android handsets.
Last week, my colleague at CNET News, Stephen Shankland, tweeted that HTC had sent out a Facebook invitation for an event September 1 in England, France, Spain, and Germany. The company often holds fan meetups in different cities around the world to give customers a chance to check out its current portfolio of devices and to sometimes showcase some of its upcoming products, and it looks like we'll get both this time around.

A recently emerged Web site, called RankMyHack.com, seems to be geared more toward bragging rights.

HP to focus on enterprise services

In a strategic shift akin to IBM's exit from the PC industry, HP has announced that it is discontinuing its webOS operations, including the TouchPad and webOS phones. It also said that it wants to spin off its Personal Systems Group (PSG), or its PC business.
The company made these statements ahead of its third-quarter earnings report, which hinted at a possible rationale behind the move: HP PSG remains the PC market leader, but revenues fell by three percent and profits were the lowest among the company's other divisions at 5.9 percent.

Google now wants to be like Apple??

Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility was all about the patents. Just as shopping at Prada is all about the necessity to own something that is black.
Many have theorized about the strategy behind blowing two years of Google's profits on a hardware operation. Some have even whispered mischievously that there may be no strategy at all, other than some vague pragmatic expediency and Microsoft-battling.
However, there has also emerged the notion that now Google can be like Apple--a company with its own hardware/software infrastructure that welcomes you into its warm bosom and keeps you there with untold varieties of emotional sustenance.

Street View going to the depths of Amazon

amazoogle
It’s hard to believe that Google’s Street View has been in use for over four years. What’s more amazing, perhaps, given the rate at which they have canvassed the world’s streets and alleyways, that there is anywhere left unmapped. But while their teams have successfully traced the surfaces of most large cities and a number of other interesting areas, I suppose it won’t come as a surprise that the remote reaches of the Amazon have not yet been put under the lens.

Facebook's 'Like' button illegal in German state

Resist the temptation to declare "ich bin ein "Liker."
A German state would very much like for its residents to keep their fingers--and other assorted pointers or cursors--away from Facebook's "Like" button.
The state of Schleswig-Holstein has ordered all government offices to remove the button from their Web presence and shut down any Facebook "fan" pages, on the grounds that these things violate German and European data privacy laws.

HP trying to unload its PC Bussiness

Hewlett-Packard has been in the PC business for more than 25 years. And, needless to say, it had some good designs. It's worth a quick look at select models that stood the test of time in the wake of the disclosure today that the company is trying to unload its PC business.

The 3.5-pound HP EliteBook 2530p/2540p is a road warrior used at many Fortune 500 companies. Let me preface this with a caveat that was buried in the various HP statements today about its PC business: "There can be no assurance that any transaction regarding PSG (Personal Systems Group) will be pursued or completed." So, it's not a done deal. And there is a possibility, however remote, that HP holds on to the PC business. My hope is that it survives as an independent U.S.-based company, if only because the U.S. has almost no PC companies left.

HP has suffered from Apple's jealousy

HP's TouchPad tablet.
            HP's TouchPad tablet.
Maybe you can blame Apple for the mess at Hewlett-Packard.
HP, like so many other tech companies, has had Apple envy for the last few years. But also like so many others, it's proved no match for Apple's design and marketing machine. And today, HP paid the price for that inability. It gave up on WebOS, the mobile operating system it acquired to compete directly with Apple's iOS. And it announced plans to rid itself of its PC business.

New rumors and anonymous details have surfaced this week that point to a third "Pure Google" phone arriving in October with the latest build of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

According to information out of Korea's Electronic Times, the handset is expected to come from Samsung, run Android 4.0 and feature a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 720p Super AMOLED HD display. These details confirm reports initially leaked by Boy Genius Report nearly two months ago.

Samsung has long been rumored to be the handset maker of choice for the Nexus Prime and this recent news appears to substantiate the claims. Just this week, a pair of sources separately confirmed with OLED-Info that Samsung is readying mobile displays with a 720p resolution.

Five possible responses to the Google-Motorola merger

Google buys Motorola Mobility

There's no question that the mobile market was turned on its head yesterday when Google announced its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola.
So what's it mean for the rest of the industry? Typically, industry consolidation begets more consolidation

1. Microsoft keeps close partnership with Nokia but adds closer ties to Asian handset makers: Samsung, HTC, and LG Electronics
Since Google's plan to buy Motorola was announced, pundits have been speculating on what Microsoft's next move might be. As a sort of knee-jerk reaction, people have wondered if Microsoft might take its relationship with Nokia to the next level.
